OST’s Martha Merrill named Business Educator of the Year

Martha Merrill, associate professor of Office Systems Technology, has been named the Business Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Business Education Association.

The TBEA provides professional development for business educators in Tennessee. Merrill was chosen Business Educator of the Year by a TBEA committee of her peers. The announcement of Merrill’s award was made at the association’s recent conference in Manchester.

Merrill has been with the College’s Business and Computer Technology Department six years. She teaches students to use software applications in a business setting and also teaches Web technology classes for the Media Technologies program.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this teaching award,” said Merrill. “Preparing our ‘Career/Technical’ degree students to confidently enter the business world is a difficult yet joyful task.

“It’s important to me to provide learning opportunities that will not only teach students how to use software but will also develop the team-participation, project-management and problem-solving skills that they will inevitably use in today’s business settings.”

Merrill is certified in several areas of specialization in Web technology. Beyond teaching, she is active in a number of professional organizations. She served as co-chair of the Technology Workshops Committee for the Southern Business Education Association Conference in Franklin in 2005. In addition, she has presented or co-presented many workshops and served on the Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman’s Information Systems Technology Advisory Committee.
