Employee Profile
Name:
Tony L. Crossland
Title: Assistant Professor of Math
Major responsibilities: Teaching developmental and college-level
math courses, advising, tutoring, mentoring, and serving on committees
Length of service at the College: Almost 4 years
Place of birth: Northport, Alabama (just outside of Tuscaloosa
… ROLL TIDE!)
Family members: My parents, Dewey and Maveleen Crossland,
live back in Northport. My sister, Karen Ramsey, lives in Byron,
Georgia with her family.
Something no one knows about you: I was a published cartoonist
while in college. My cartoon entitled “River Country”
won national recognition for its humorous storyline.
Greatest achievement or proudest moment: My proudest moment
so far has to be receiving a standing ovation from my church when
I was named valedictorian for my high school senior class. It
was also my most humbling experience.
Favorite things outside work: I’m still an avid
cartoonist. Some of my funniest material comes from the classroom
… like the time I had a student bring a remote control to
the test instead of his calculator. I also enjoy spending time
with my friends playing Scrabble, swimming and collecting.
Most rewarding part of your job: I get the greatest sense
of satisfaction when I see the proverbial “light bulb”
go off. Math, by nature, is a difficult subject. Witnessing that
instant when confusion becomes clarity in a student’s mind
is why I chose teaching as a career.
Greatest unfulfilled ambition: Earning a doctoral degree
Favorite quote: “If you believe in yourself and
have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll
be a winner. The price of victory is high – but so are the
rewards.” --Paul “Bear” Bryant
