Mathematics awarded $10,000 ORAU grant

The Pellissippi State Foundation has received a $10,000 grant from Oak Ridge Associated Universities to support the activities of Pellissippi State’s Mathematics Department.

The new grant will be applied to the 2007 Middle School Math Contest and other student activities, such as the Pellissippi Math Bowl, American Math Association of Two-Year College’s Student Math League Competition and Pellissippi State Problem of the Week Competition.

“The Mathematics Department appreciates the financial support from ORAU as they partner with us to enhance student interest in math,” said Catherine Williams, Mathematics department head. “We are encouraged by their continuing support of the middle school competition and other Math Department activities. We are very fortunate to be a part of a community of professionals who value achievements in mathematics at all levels.”

Williams also commended the involvement of Jonathon Lamb, associate professor of Mathematics, for his “enthusiasm and hard work on the ORAU gift and for his dedication in raising community awareness of our program.”

ORAU sponsored this year’s Middle School Math Contest, held in April. The competition saw a record 672 students from 35 schools in East Tennessee participate.

The Pellissippi State Foundation exists to develop friends and funds for support of the educational, cultural and service goals of Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

This semester marks Pellissippi State’s highest enrollment ever, with more than 8,100 students pursuing College Transfer and Career/Technical programs.
