EMPLOYEE PROFILE
Name: Betty Bumgarner
Title: FLAG Center Coordinator
Major
responsibilities: My responsibilities include performing
administrative duties related to the FLAG Center, screening student
applicants for admission to the program, teaching FLAG writing
and reading courses and promoting the program to the college and
community.
Length of service at the College: Five years
Place of birth: Maryville (pronounced “Murville”)
Family members: My mother is still alive and
well. I also have a plant named Gertrude.
Something no one knows about you: (1) The one
quality that attracts me most to a person (male or female of any
age) is his or her sense of humor, and (2) I have a great deal
of compassion for most people.
Greatest achievement or proudest moment: Being
a lifetime learner. In addition to a master’s degree, I’ve
gone back to school several times (on a part-time basis) and taken
classes. I rarely turn down the opportunity to learn something
new.
Favorite things outside work: I almost always
have a mystery novel on hand that I’m reading. I love to
meet interesting people. I spend a fair amount of time decorating
and redecorating my condo.
Most rewarding part of your job: I like to read
user’s manuals and help menus, teach myself how to use new
software and develop ways to present the information to people
in an easy-to-understand fashion. It is fun to think about a particular
person or group and specific techniques to make software training
easy for them. This includes developing resource materials. I
didn’t say I was normal….
Greatest unfulfilled ambition: Writing a novel.
Most people have a story waiting to be told. I don’t have
a clue how to go about writing a novel but would like to try.
Favorite quote: “People may forget the
words you say, but they will never forget the way you make them
feel.”
