Pellissippi State presentation to raise awareness of hate crimesEvery hour, somewhere in America, someone commits a hate crime. These hate crimes have a devastating and long-lasting psychological and emotional impact not only on the victims but also on their communities. To raise awareness of this issue, the Magnolia Avenue Campus is sponsoring “Traveling Trunk,” a presentation by Gene Rosenberg of the Knoxville Hate Crimes Working Group (HCWG). The presentation will be November 11 at 6 p.m. The trunk contains simple, recognizable symbols of hatred designed to spark group discussion. Items include pieces from the Oklahoma City Federal Building and the Berlin Wall, barbed wire from the Holocaust, a charred cross, and a Ku Klux Klan robe. The Knoxville HCWG was formed in 1996 to counter what appeared to be an increase in hate crimes in this region. It is a collaborative effort between Project Change and the FBI. The group's membership is comprised of local and county law enforcement agencies, along with community agencies and organizations.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
