Pellissippi State study-abroad semester set for Morelia, Mexico

While your friends and family freeze through another gray Tennessee winter, you can be soaking up the sun in Morelia, Mexico—and getting college credit for it!

Pellissippi State and the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies are offering a brand-new semester-long study abroad program, and registration is now under way.

The enrollment deadline is November 30, and the number of students is limited.

Participants leave Knoxville February 1, 2008, for Morelia, a city of more than one million situated in central Mexico between Guadalajara and Mexico City. They return April 29—with 12 hours of college credit and a lifetime of memories that include the irreplaceable experience of living with a local family.

“This program is one of a number of excellent educational opportunities available for our students through TnCIS,” said Theresa Castillo, program coordinator.

Founded in 2006, TnCIS represents a group of colleges and universities devoted to making international education and cultural understanding a primary goal of higher education in Tennessee.

The organization is headquartered at Pellissippi State, and people interested in the Morelia program must apply and register through the College.

“Last spring Pellissippi State had 16 students enroll in a three-week program in Mexico,” said Castillo. “We expect an even larger number in this program.”

The semester starts off with a two-day excursion into Mexico City that includes tours of the pyramids of Teotihuacan and the National Palace. A month later, a three-day-weekend trip takes the students to Guanajuato, a silver mining capital. Six other Saturday excursions are planned to cities and villages around Morelia.

“Those who travel to Morelia will have an opportunity to see the world in a different way,” said Castillo. “This is not a typical tourist destination. Morelia was an important colonial city, and it retains its original character and charm.

“We hope when students return, they will help us internationalize our community by sharing their experiences.”

Students who enroll in the Morelia program will register for a minimum of 12 hours of credit—6 hours of Spanish and 6 hours of general education courses. Other online classes also are available.

The cost of the semester is $4,800, which includes full room and board, a round-trip airline ticket and all excursions. Students may be eligible for federal and state financial aid, as well as for international education grants from the College.

Applications to study in Morelia are available at tncis.org and at the TnCIS office, 103 Alexander on the Pellissippi Campus.
