Pellissippi State offers Certified Internet Webmaster certificationThis January Pellissippi State becomes one of the few colleges in the country to offer a nationally recognized Web certification as a part of an associate's degree program. The college also becomes among the first to offer the certification entirely online. The Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) skills certification is for professionals who design, develop, administer, secure and support Internet- or intranet-related services. It is endorsed by the International Webmaster Association and the Association of Internet Professionals. “A CIW certification provides graduates with Internet skills that are recognized industrywide,” said Gay Bryant, program coordinator of Web Development Technology at Pellissippi State. “And it certifies to employers anywhere in the country that the student can perform at a certain level based on nationally established standards.” For the past two years Pellissippi State has offered an online associate's degree in Web Development Technology. The new CIW certification, which is sponsored by the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies, will enhance the existing degree program by adding three new courses, along with three corresponding exam certification courses. In January Pellissippi State will offer the first two courses with their exam courses. The first of the new offerings is CIW Foundations, a class that teaches the basics of pure HTML coding and Web page design and gives students a broad overview of various Web software tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash. The second course is CIW Site Design. It covers the basics of creating a Web site grounded in professional design principles. In fall semester 2004 Pellissippi State will offer the third course in the series, CIW E-Commerce Designer, and its corresponding test course. A student who completes all three courses successfully will attain CIW Master Designer certification status. In addition to offering CIW certification to students, Pellissippi State is also now an online Faculty Institute for CIW. This means the college will provide online classes for high school, technical center and postsecondary teachers who wish to gain certification in order to teach CIW courses at their schools. Faculty Institute classes are taught parallel with Pellissippi State's regular CIW certification classes and are offered for college credit as well as for providing certification. There are only three such training facilities in the country that are online.
