Magnolia Avenue Campus Drama Club presents ‘Al Takes a
Bride’
“Al Takes a Bride,” a play written by award-winning
author Gary Sunshine, will be presented by Pellissippi State’s
Magnolia Avenue Campus Drama Club November 30 and December 1,
7-9 p.m.
The play, which tackles the controversial issue of same-sex marriage,
will be performed in the Community Room of the Magnolia Avenue
Campus.
Formed in 2005, the Drama Club consists of students, faculty and
staff. “Al Takes a Bride” marks the group’s
third performance.
“The club chose to perform this play in response to the
debate surrounding Tennessee’s marriage amendment, which
appeared on the November 7 ballot,” said Rick Patton, associate
professor of English at Pellissippi State.
The play is set in the 19th century and has two main characters,
Alice and Freda. Rumors abound, but the two women, who call themselves
Al and Fred, have managed to keep their relationship secret. The
two often have pretend weddings, but things get serious and their
relationship is put to the test when Al tells her family about
her love for Fred.
Admission to “Al Takes a Bride” is free, and a reception
follows the December 1 performance. Donations will be accepted
at the door.
