Gandhi grandson speaks via DVD at seminar

When Arun Gandhi decided to rally against physical and emotional attacks in his South African homeland during 1940s apartheid, his parents sent him to live with his grandfather in India to learn how to fight—not with his fists but with nonviolence.
Arun Gandhi had the perfect teacher.

His grandfather was Mohandas K. Gandhi, a pacifist who led India during an intense 18-month revolt that produced the nation state’s independence from Great Britain in 1947. Arun Gandhi lived with his grandfather from 1946 until Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination in 1948, so he experienced India’s most tumultuous period firsthand.

Arun Gandhi will speak via DVD at a seminar on power at Pellissippi State November 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Goins Auditorium.

The event is the last of four “Gods, Gold and Glory: the Global Dynamics of Power” seminars sponsored by the Pellissippi State chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges.

Arun Gandhi’s appearance is entitled “Lessons Learned From My Grandfather.”

He will discuss such topics as why nonviolence is so difficult to practice and why peace has become such an illusive dream. He also will describe his legendary grandfather’s concept of a nonviolent lifestyle, summed up in this quote from the famous fighter for peace: “I am willing to die, but there is no cause for which I am willing to kill.”

A discussion by local panelists will follow Arun Gandhi’s presentation.
