Pellissippi State donors, board member honored at Philanthropy Day luncheon

Two longtime supporters of Pellissippi State were honored by the Great Smoky Mountain chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its National Philanthropy Day luncheon November 9 in Knoxville.

Citadel Broadcasting was named Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist, and the Alcoa Foundation was selected Outstanding Foundation. Both of the award recipients were nominated by the Pellissippi State Foundation.

Phyllis Driver was also recognized at the luncheon for her service to the College.

Citadel is a signature sponsor for Pellissippi State’s annual Hot Air Balloon Festival and funds a scholarship with the Pellissippi State Foundation. The company also provided funding to bring musician John Corbett to the Performing Arts Center and Julie Roberts and other musicians to the balloon festival.

Citadel Broadcasting owns local radio stations WIVK-FM, WNML-FM, WNRX-AM, WOKI-FM and EARL-FM.

The Alcoa Foundation has long been a supporter of the Pellissippi State scholarship program. Alcoa is a sponsor of such major College events as the balloon festival and provides funding for the Engineering Technology program.

“We’re very fortunate to have two partners like Citadel Broadcasting and the Alcoa Foundation,” said Allen Edwards, Pellissippi State president. “Citadel and Alcoa not only invest with us financially, but their employees also serve on our boards and committees.”

Phyllis Driver was selected by the Pellissippi State Foundation to be honored at the luncheon. Driver is chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees. Under her leadership, the Foundation has secured private gifts in excess of $3.5 million.

Driver also volunteers at numerous College events and serves on the major gifts campaign committee.

The Foundation is in the midst of a fundraising campaign—“Connecting Communities, Changing Lives”—to provide support in five primary areas:
  • Art and Media Technologies Building—Equipment and Technology Enhancement
  • New Blount County Campus—Equipment and Technology Enhancement
  • Foundation Endowment Growth
  • Nursing Program
  • Academic and Student Enrichment
The Pellissippi State Foundation exists to develop friends and funds for support of the education, cultural and service goals of Pellissippi State.
