Pellissippi State hosts seminar on marketing to children

The impact of marketing on America’s newest and youngest generation of spenders—children—will be the focal point of an interactive seminar November 21.

“Born to Buy: Advertising and the New Consumer” will be broadcast at 6:30 p.m. to the Goins Building Auditorium.

Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College, will be the guest speaker. She will cover such topics as the impact of Saturday morning cartoons and Happy Meals on children. She has served as consultant to the United Nations and is author of “The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure.”

A panel consisting of faculty members Lisa Bogaty, Gay Bryant and K.D. Lawson will offer insights after the presentation.

The session is the fourth in a five-part series of Honors Satellite Seminars on “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are” being presented through December. The series, which is open to the public at no charge, is sponsored by the College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and Student Life and Recreation.. The program has been produced by Phi Theta Kappa and the National Collegiate Honors Council.

The last session will be December 5.
