PTK seminar explores roles of Jesus in American society

The different roles that Jesus plays in Christianity and different ways Christian groups say they experience Jesus will be the topic of a satellite seminar December 5.

“Jesus in America: Personal Savior or Cultural Hero?” will be broadcast to the Goins Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

Richard Wightman Fox, professor of history at the University of Southern California and well-known scholar on American culture and intellectual history, will give the taped lecture. Among his books is “Jesus in America: Personal Savior, Cultural Hero, National Obsession.”

His presentation will be followed by a local discussion led by Eddie Francisco, Pellissippi State’s writer in residence; David Howell, adjunct faculty member in philosophy; and Steve Hixon, minister with Baptist Collegiate Ministries.

The session is the last in a five-part series of Honors Satellite Seminars on “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.”

The series, open to the public at no charge, is sponsored by the College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and Student Life and Recreation. The program has been produced by Phi Theta Kappa and the National Collegiate Honors Council.
