Festival of Cultures
Learning about faraway cultures doesn’t always require a lot of money, a passport or even a flight out of the U.S. In fact, on April 18, it was as simple as taking the short drive to the Pellissippi Campus for the Festival of Cultures.
Faculty, staff and students representing four continents and more than a dozen nations shared their music, dance, food and native costumes at the event. The festival was sponsored by the College’s Multicultural Awareness Club and Access and Diversity Office.
Award-winning sitarist Indrajit Banerjee and percussionist Gourisankar Karmakar of India performed Hindustani classical music. Ecuadorian performer Wakay Tacuango played tribal music on a handmade flute and panpipes.
Guests were encouraged to try different dance styles—tango, salsa, Russian folk dance, lion dance, merengue, cha-cha-cha....
Booths and exhibits offered information about Pellissippi State’s Study Abroad program, as well as advice on international travel.
