Students in the Interior Design Technology (IDT) program will be prepared for numerous and varied careers in the field of interior design. Such opportunities include working in an architectural or interior design firm or as a designer, merchandiser, or sales representative for related interior design industries such as furnishings, floor coverings, fabrics, fixtures and finishes. Other career possibilities exist in the consturction/building industry as designers and/or supervisors.
This degree, plus four years of interior design work experience and successful completion of a national exam, will qualify the graduate for licensing as a registered interior designer.
Students are also well prepared to meet the new technological demands of this field. Graduates will be knowledgeable in various aspects of design as well as CAD software (especially AutoCAD).
Cooperative Education/Internships
The Interior Design Technology student is given the opportunity to work, in a paid position, in the field of interior design while in his/her last semester at Pellissippi State. The student is placed with a company that specializes in work of interest to the student.
Job Opportunities
The IDT program began in spring 1995 and has a number of graduates working in the field of interior design. Graduates are employed at companies including Business Interiors, Corporate Interiors, Community Tectonics, Ivan Allen, Braden's, Bennett Galleries, Bearden Paint and Decorating, Lowe's Designer Kitchen and Mantel and Ethan Allen. Salaries vary depending on the career path taken by the graduates.
