AN ORIENTATION AND MENTORING PROGRAM FOR ENTERING AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS

The goals of Project SUCCESS are:

To enrich the educational experience and improve
retention of African-American students.
-
To foster a supportive relationship that promotes
academic success and provides an individual for the student to turn
to when in need.

To increase awareness of significant issues facing
African-American students on campus.
-
To assist students in adjusting to campus life and
in finding both on- and off-campus services.
How
am I assigned a mentor?
You are assigned a mentor at the Project SUCCESS orientation program.
Designated mentors are at each of Pellissippi State’s four campus
locations. You will receive notice of your mentor match and will be
invited to a get-together to meet that person.
What are my responsibilities?
Your responsibilities are as follows:

To take a proactive role in the mentor-student relationship
and initiate contact with your mentor.

To meet regularly with your mentor, always striving
to be punctual.
-
To ask questions and work to build a friendly relationship
by talking to your mentor about whatever problems you feel comfortable
discussing.

To take the responsibility to follow through on
advice and referrals from your mentor.

To pursue academic success.
