Catalog Course Description:    
  Supervised practicum experience with a minimum of 15 clock hours in seminar and 45 clock hours of approved early childhood practical experiences.  This course focuses on the student’s demonstration of competencies that produce positive developmental outcomes for young children aged birth to nine. 
Entry Level Standards:    
  Must be able to read and write at the college level.

II. Course Objectives*:    
  A. Display professionalism in an early childhood setting.
  B. Display competency in selecting age-appropriate material and equipment for an early childhood setting.
  C. Effectively design a program structure for an early childhood setting.
  D. Identify age-appropriate activities and experiences for an early childhood setting.
  E. Display appropriate interaction and supervision in a preschool environment.
  F. Plan effective daily schedules for and early childhood environment.
  G. Plan and facilitate learning experiences for an early childhood classroom.
  H. Exhibit a knowledge of guidance techniques used in and early childhood classroom.

III. Instructional Processes*:     
Students will:      
  1. Observe children in and early childhood setting.
  2. Direct activities in and early childhood setting.
  3. Use the internet for communication with the instructor or peers.
  4. Participate in group projects to demonstrate collaborative abilities.

IV. Expectations for Student Performance*: 
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Complete field work (45 hrs. on-the-job practicum in student’s own work setting or other approved early childhood practical site) to be documented and evaluated by course instructor.
2. Develop a curriculum plan for and early childhood setting
3. Create and direct learning experience to be observed by the instructor.

V. Evaluation:
A. Testing Procedures:
Students will participate in various group projects and activities to demonstrate knowledge of course content.
B. Laboratory Expectations:
Students will keep a journal, reflecting on each class topic.  They will share in writing the knowledge they have learned and how they will use this knowledge in the classroom. 
C. Field Work:
Students will complete 45 hours of field experience in a site approved by the instructor.  Students will keep a running journal of on-site experiences.

A. Attendance Policy:
Pellissippi State Technical Community College expects students to attend all scheduled instructional activities.  As a minimum, student in all courses must be present for at least 75 percent of their scheduled class and laboratory meeting in order to receive credit for the course.
B. Academic Dishonesty:
Plagiarism, cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited.  A student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, is immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanction s that may be imposed through the regular Pellissippi State procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign and F for the exercise or examination or to assign an F for the course.
