Catalog Course Description:
	Study of basic elements of music. No previous training or experience required.
Entry Level Standards:
	The student entering this course should be able to read at college level and perform mathematical calculations involving fractions. No prior knowledge of music is required.

II. Course Objectives*:
	A.			Demonstrate an understanding of music notation in two clefs. I.6, II.6
	B.			Demonstrate an understanding of major and minor scales and key signatures. II.6
	C.			Demonstrate an understanding of rhythmic organization. II.6, VI.4
	D.			Develop the ability to relate written music notation to the piano keyboard. I.6, II.6
	E.			Demonstrate an understanding of interval relationships. II.6, VI.4
	F.			Acquire and utilize knowledge of the basic music terminology.  II.1, II.6

Students will:

IV. Expectations for Student Performance*:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
	1.			Read and write notes of specific pitch in two clefs. A.
	2.			Read and write notes of specific duration. A.
	3.			Demonstrate an understanding of rhythmic organization by  counting the beats of a music excerpt correctly. C.
	4.			Construct a major scale from any note given. B, E.
	5.			Construct major key signature from the name of the key.  B
	6.			Construct minor scales (three forms). B.
	7.			Construct minor key signatures. B.
	8.			Relate the basic structure of music (the interval) to scale structures. E.
	9.			Construct the four types of triads on any given note. E.

V. Evaluation:
	A. Testing Procedures:
			1. Students will be given 5 unit tests during the semester, each contributing 15% of the grade. (15% x 5= 75%)  2. Students will be given a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester.  This will constitute 25% of the final grade.

VI. Policies:
	A. Attendance Policy:
		Pellissippi State Technical Community College expects students to attend all scheduled instructional activities.  As a minimum students in all courses must be present for at least 75 percent of their scheduled class and laboratory meetings in order to receive credit for the course.  Individual departments/ programs/disciplines, with the approval of the vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, may have requirements that are more stringent.
	B. Academic Dishonesty Policy:
		The instructor has the primary responsibility for control over classroom behavior and maintenance of academic integrity.  Plagiarism, cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited.  A student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, is immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed through the regular Pellissippi State procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.  (Pellissippi State Catalog)
