Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.

Liberal Arts Department

In the summer of 1999, an academic reorganization at Pellissippi State Technical Community College reduced the number of departments from eight to six. At that time, programs in the Humanities Department were combined with certain programs from the Social Sciences Department to form the Department of Liberal Arts. The Early Childhood Education, Physical Education, and Psychology programs were transferred from the Humanities Department to the Department of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. The Department of Liberal Arts currently houses programs and courses in sixteen areas: Art, American Sign Language, Child and Family Studies, French, German, History, Humanities, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Spanish, Speech, Social Work, Theater, and Women’s Studies.

Students in this department have opportunities to continue their formal education and to develop their capacities for self-directed life-long learning. Most programs lead to the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, a milestone on the way to a Bachelor's degree. All focus on some facet of human activity, learned through understanding of human sciences, skills of expression, and means of inquiry into human nature and individual and social roles in society and the universe. Our courses provide much of the underpinning of general education competencies that make college truly college and our special events and programs are designed to spark and renew interest in the disciplines at the core of the college experience.
