Student Information

When you apply for admission to Pellissippi State, you will be asked to complete a Major Designation form
. Be sure to check the appropriate box labeled either Art Studio or Art History. This ensures that you will be assigned an academic advisor in the visual art discipline.

Sign up to be advised during the pre-registration advising periods for upcoming semesters. Most art majors continue on to a four-year institution. Bring an undergraduate college catalog from the four-year institution that you have selected to complete your art degree (B.F.A. or B.A.), to your advising session.

Check with your advisor during the semester if you have concerns or questions.

The Curriculum below leads to an Associate of Science degree from Pellissippi State, and is designed specifically for students who wish to pursue a B.F.A. or B.A. in a studio arts discipline. Students are provided opportunities to participate in a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. Each spring, the Annual College Art Exhibit, a large exhibition of student work created during the academic year, is mounted in the college rotunda. In addition to the formal spring show, work created in drawing, painting, printmaking, and design are exhibited in on-going presentations in the corridors outside the art studios. Each semester, students in ART 1031 create unique one of a kind chairs that grace the hallways for three weeks.
Students are encouraged to submit their work for local and regional exhibitions. Information regarding calls for artists, potential commissions, exhibition opportunities, assistance in selecting appropriate work for submission, and documentation is provided. Of particular note is Pellissippi's spring fundraiser, ARTIQUE. This annual event features an upscale auction of regional fine art and antiques which attracts serious art collectors and gallery owners. Pellissippi students creating aesthetically significant work are encouraged to submit select pieces for jury consideration.
With the opening of the new arts building in spring 2007, exhibition opportunities will greatly increase. Plans include a formal college art gallery coupled with an outside sculpture garden. All hallways surrounding the new art studios will be constructed of materials that will allow continuous informal exhibits of student work in fine art, graphic design, and photography.

Expanding student's visual environment and personal aesthetic experiences is a primary consideration of Pellissippi's art program. As time and finances permit, college art faculty coordinate and lead excursions to important art venues in the United States and abroad. Students receive academic college credit by enrolling in specifically designed courses related to the trip destination.

Students in ItalyIn March 2005, a group of 22 students spent nine days in Florence and Rome, Italy, studying Italian Renaissance art. Scheduled activities included the Academia del Arte, the Uffizi Gallery, the Medici Chapels, the Bargello Museum, Brunelleschi's Duomo and Ghiberti's Baptistery doors in Florence.

Students in Rome

Rome provided opportunities to experience the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's, the Pantheon, and other artistically significant offerings. In conjunction with planned activities, free days to explore both cities, meet the Italian people and partake in the Italian culture were provided to enrich the overall adventure.

Previous trips include five days in New York City, where students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, private galleries of note in Soho, Uptown, and Chelsea, plus a live Broadway theatre production. Shorter regional trips to museums and exhibitions of note in Chattanooga, Nashville, and Atlanta are more frequent and planned as opportunities present themselves.

Plans for Amsterdam, Holland, featuring Renaissance and Baroque art of northern Europe is currently under consideration!

As funds become available, the full-time art faculty select outstanding fine art majors to receive a full tuition scholarship for one semester. The art scholarship has been awarded four times in the recent past.
Elgibility for the scholarship requires,
  • The recipient must be in their second year of studies at the college
  • The recipient must be enrolled in studio art courses for the scholarship semester
  • The recipient must have definite plans to complete their four-year degree (B.A. or B.F.A.) in studio discipline at a four-year institution

  • January of 2006 will herald the long-awaited groundbreaking of a new arts building on the Parkway campus of Pellissippi State. Located on the northwest corner of the campus, the new two-story facility will house Visual Art, Communication Graphics, Video Production Technology, Photography, and Web Design. In addition to four new visual art studios, plans include a formal gallery and sculpture garden, photographic studios and darkrooms, state of the art computer labs, video studios, and video editing labs.
The visual art studios will occupy fully half of the first floor and feature studio spaces devoted specifically to painting, drawing/printmaking/design, sculpture, and ceramics. Walls surrounding the studios will be devoted to on-going exhibitions of student work. Sufficient storage and space to house the assorted materials and equipment associated with art will finally become a reality.
With luck, we will move in by Spring semester, 2007!
