Catalog Course Description:
An introduction to information systems. The course takes the user perspective in the analysis of organizational information needs, system design, system acquisition, and organizational impact of the system.

Entry-Level Standards:  The beginning student should be able to read, write, speak, and reason at the college level.

Pre-requisite(s): MGT 2000, OST 1211, or OST 1005

II.      COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student should be able to:
  1. Exhibit an adequate information system vocabulary. (I, II, IV, V)
  2. Demonstrate an adequate knowledge of information system design, evaluation, and acquisition. (I, III, IV, V)
  3. Demonstrate an adequate knowledge of how to use an information system to support organizational objectives. (I, II, III, V)
III.     INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESSES: Students will
  1. Practice elements of the work ethic such as professionalism, preparedness, punctuality, honesty, cooperation, dependability, contribution, effectiveness, good manners, etc. (social/behavioral sciences outcome; transitional strategy)

  2. Implement partial solutions at the intermediate level to real-world management information system case study using spreadsheet, database and Web page development software.   3. As part of a team, research, write and give a professional business presentation of a major information systems plan for a simulated company. V.     EVALUATION:
  1. Testing Procedure:
    This information will be provided in full detail via syllabus supplement by the instructor. A minimum of 2 exams is recommended for this course.

  2. Laboratory Expectations:
    Students will implement partial solutions to information system needs posed in assigned case studies as homework during the first 9 weeks of class using spreadsheet, database, and web-browser software. The instructor will demonstrate the techniques necessary to implement these solutions during scheduled lecture time.

  3. Field Work:
    Student will do a major team project. The details of this project will be provided by the instructor.

  4. Other Evaluation Methods:
    Class participation, in-class group work and homework will also comprise the final grade for the course. Each instructor must provide full details during the first week of class via a syllabus supplement.

VI.      POLICIES:
  1. Attendance Policy:
    Pellissippi State Technical Community College expects students to attend all scheduled instructional activities. As a minimum, students in all courses must be present for at least 75 percent of their scheduled class and laboratory meetings in order to receive credit for the course. [NOTE: No differentiation is noted for excused/unexcused absences. These will be treated as an absence.]

  2. Academic Dishonesty:
    Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular Pellissippi State procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.

    College-owned or –operated computing resources are provided for use by students of Pellissippi State. All students are responsible for the usage of Pellissippi State's computing resources in an effective, efficient, ethical and lawful manner.
