Guidelines for a Successful Internship
- Read your syllabus thoroughly; clarify any questions you have with
Coordinator. Request that your employer also read the syllabus to
better acquaint them with the internship course requirements
(even make a copy for them!).
- All jobs must be approved by the Internship Coordinator.
- If you already have a job or find your own, contact the Coordinator
to provide her with employment information.
- If Coordinator helps match you with an employer, those jobs have
been pre-approved, but information on how to contact you and/or
supervisor, etc. still need to be provided.
- The internship should begin as early in the semester as possible,
but it can also begin prior to the semester. As long as some of the
required hours are worked during the "enrolled" semester, prior hours
worked may be counted towards the total required for your internship.
- When employer contacts you:
- Your first impression is being made with that first phone call;
be sure and use your most pleasant, professional manner and voice,
and be courteous and confident.
- Arrange a time to meet with them OR discuss over the phone the
following:
- your abilities as they match with the job
- the days and hours you have available in your school schedule
to work
- the employer's preferred days and times for you to work
- detailed directions on how to get to the employer's office;
where to park, etc.
- the appropriate work attire for this employer
- At the interview or first meeting: FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE IMPORTANT
AND LASTING!
- Dress professionally.(You can adjust your attire to match your
co-workers at a later time)
- Arrive early!
- Exhibit confidence in your skills, abilities, reliability, and
ability to learn. BUT, do not mislead employer if you feel you
cannot perform what they are expecting.
- Smile make eye contact and offer a firm handshake!
- Have on hand a copy of your most recently updated resume,
transcript, any certifications, and personal information
(as might be needed to fill out an employment application).
- Express appreciation for the meeting and the opportunity being
afforded you.
- For more information and suggestions on interviewing, see Coordinator.
- Once hired, adhere to a pre-set work schedule; demonstrate excellent
attendance and punctuality!
- Show initiative by asking for manuals on software or policies to read
on your own time in order to be more knowledgeable and prepared to do
a good job.
- Display an enthusiastic attitude! Remember, you are representing not
only yourself, but your college and your program. Your benefit is
obvious-you could get hired following the internship! But you are also
setting an example of what the employer can expect from future PSCC
interns.
- Stay in regular contact with Coordinator by email, phone, or in person.
