Faculty/Staff Support logo

Purpose of Center: To support faculty in implementing innovative techniques for instruction, curriculum to improve academic programs, student learning, assessment for improvement of instruction/learning/curriculum.

What "support" for faculty is available? Released time, materials, equipment, professional development. See also Instructional Development Committee. Here's a sample of what faculty had to say:

The most useful aspects of the workshop were:
  • "Practicality! Several techniques are easily adaptable to the courses I teach, and these may help me to get students more focused on their processes instead of simply on their outcomes."

  • "Learned how to use CATs in the classroom to feel connected with my students and in the meantime measure my success."

  • "All of it! Excellent presentation. Very energizing! Especially useful to see specific examples of CATs, how other faculty have used them, and how they 'closed the feedback loop.'"

In fall 2001, with COE and Geier funds, the ILA Committee sponsored a workshop on Classroom Assessment Techniques for faculty. Approximately 35 fulltime and adjunct faculty from multiple disciplines attended.

Upcoming Opportunities: The ILA Committee is using consultant materials to develop a workshop series that faculty can take in the 2002-03 year to learn about and collaborate in the development of classroom research projects.

If I have an idea for a project, what do I do? Contact Linda Randolph to describe what you want to do. If your idea aligns with COE purpose and funds, a project plan will be developed.

What is in the project plan? The project plan will outline the following:

  • intended objectives or student outcomes,
  • planned strategies to achieve intended objectives or outcomes,
  • assessment and evaluation: how you will know if outcome is achieved.

Is there any help for the assessment/evaluation part of this? Yes, contact Linda Randolph. The Innovation in Learning and Assessment (ILA) Committee is working on developing and identifying resources that will provide ongoing support for faculty in assessment efforts for the improvement of learning.

Who is on the COE Innovations in Learning and Assessment Committee?

2001-2002 Team:
  • Caroline Best
  • Jean MacInnis
  • Martha Merrill
  • Mary Monroe-Ellis
  • Linda Randolph
  • John Reaves
  • Bob Stern
  • Sue Yamin

Membership changes according to interest and time. Because of the expertise in assessment-for-improvement that members developed in 98-99, this group has served as a resource for Academic and Student Affairs Departments' development of five-column plans during the Fall terms.

Is there information available about COE projects that have already been implemented? Yes. See the list of projects since 1998. For additional detail, an annual report describing the first year's results is available.
