In 2001-03, the ILA Committee purchased and reviewed three series of videos on critical thinking and
assessment.
An annotated list of the videos can be found here. The committee found these particularly useful:
- TITLE: Students Empowered Through Critical Thinking
Students who have completed their first critical thinking course describe to administrators the benefits they gained from the course and express their anger that they were deprived of critical thinking instruction for so many years. This tape is good for those interested in persuading others that students appreciate critical thinking instruction. Topics include: student attitudes toward traditional didactic instruction, naive assumptions administrators make about the level of instruction going on in their schools, critical thinking as a valuable job skill, and students’ desire for more critical thinking instruction.
- TITLE: Current Educational Issues
Gerald Nosich describes strategies for encouraging students to think critically by designing assignments that require students to discover. Good for all levels of instruction. Topics include: what does and doesn't motivate students, why discovery motivates students, why students remember what they discover, recreating historical discoveries, and discovering naive misconceptions.
These videos are currently available from Linda Randolph. They will soon
be cataloged and available in the media collection.
