Engineering Advising

1. The first task is to determine whether a two-year career/technical degree or a four-year university parallel degree is being sought.  The career opportunities vary greatly depending on the degree. The Placement Office can provide information on jobs and starting salaries (http://www.pstcc.edu/departments/placement/ or 694-6554). The Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest recap of the value of degrees over a typical 40-year working lifetime can be viewed at: www.bls.gov/home.htm.  Once the decision is made, make sure the right major code is in the system (screen 136 or 681). Complete a Change of Major form in the Records Office if it is incorrect
2. Students who are interested in the two-year career/technical degree can follow the curriculum outline in the Career/Technical Programs section of the Catalog & Handbook or review their On-Course degree audit.  Students in career/technical programs do NOT have to meet A89 high school requirements.  For students interested in furthering their education beyond the two-year degree, 2+2 articulation agreements are available with ETSU ONLY that transfer the two-year career/technical degree into a bachelor's program in engineering technology.  Exceptions to the agreements may only be approved by the receiving institution. ETSU also offers a bachelor's degree program in Construction Technology, Industrial Technology, and Manufacturing Technology taught entirely on the PSTCC campus. Students interested in the Construction  Technology program at PSTCC campus should contact George Cox (gcox@pstcc.edu or 694-6504)  Student interested in the Industrial Technology or Manufacturing Technology program at the PSTCC campus should contact Pat Riddle (priddle@pstcc.edu or 694-6514). The job opportunities for students who earn a bachelor's degree in engineering technology versus a traditional engineering degree differ. For example, engineering technology graduates cannot become licensed professional engineers in many states, including Tennessee. The traditional engineering degree may give an edge to some people in some jobs over the long run, but many believe that salary is more of a function of the individual and the job than anything else. The Placement Office can provide information on jobs and starting salaries (http://www.pstcc.edu/departments/placement/ or 694-6554).
3. Students who are interested in the four-year university parallel degree can follow an articulation agreement or transfer guide available on the web (Students who have attempted 12 or fewer college-level hours from a school other than PSTCC are eligible) or review their On-Course degree audit. Students in university parallel programs MUST meet A89 high school requirements as well. We have articulation agreements and transfer guides with UTK for students pursuing the four-year engineering degree. The articulation agreements allow eligible students to graduate from PSTCC as well as UTK. However, due to widening differences between UTK’s engineering curriculum and PSTCC’s core curriculum, transfer guides were created starting with the 2001-2003 agreements that provide students with the prerequisite courses required for UTK’s engineering program without the extra courses that PSTCC requires for graduation. The transfer guides offer the same rules (e.g. 12-hour rule) and opportunities (e.g. grades of D transfer) as the articulation agreements, but students do NOT graduate from PSTCC. Students who complete a transfer guide do not submit an Intent to Graduate form but instead submit a transfer guide application (available in the Records Office) so that their transcript may be certified for completing the transfer guide. There is no fee for the transfer guide application and the submission dates are the same as the Intent to Graduate forms (the semester preceding anticipated completion). Exceptions to the agreements may only be approved by the receiving institution.
4. Students who are interested in attending a different school than ETSU and UTK should obtain a copy of the receiving institution’s catalog and an equivalency table (if available) to determine course requirements.
