America
Reads
The goal
of the America Reads Challenge Program is to ensure that every American child
can read well and independently by the end of the third grade. Any
Pellissippi
State
student who is eligible for
Federal Work Study through the Financial Aid Office and has a 2.5 GPA or
better may be eligible to participate in the America Reads Challenge.
Pellissippi
State
places federal work study
students into elementary schools to work as reading tutors. Responsibilities include working
one-on-one or with small groups of children on reading and reading readiness
activities. Tutors are required to participate in a training session before
starting work. The training sessions cover basic reading skills such as
phonics, whole language, games development, and reading readiness activities.
Based on your financial aid eligibility, students may be able to work up to
20 hours a week.
