Library Services Program

Grants to State Library Agencies deadline is July 31 of each year.

National Leadership Grants for Libraries deadlines are expected to fall in February. These grants are intended to enhance the quality of library services nationwide and provide coordination between libraries. The program supports four (4) funding categories: education and training, research and demonstration, preservation or digitization of library materials, and model programs of library-museum collaboration.

NEH is an independent grant-making agency, which supports research, education, and public programs in history, literature, philosophy, foreign languages, and other humanities disciplines. The NEH strongly encourages applications from two-year colleges.



NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LITERACY

NIFL is an independent federal organization that serves as a focal point for public and private activities that support the development of high-quality regional, state, and national literacy services.

Equipped for the Future seeks to improve the quality of adult education services by offering the field a comprehensive content framework, better-defined results, and standards that enable programs to focus on achieving those results.

Literacy and Information Communication System is a state-of-the-art, Internet-based information retrieval and communication system that provides access to a broad scope of literacy-related information.

Partnership for Reading is an element of the Reading Excellence Act whose mission is to make scientifically-based reading research more accessible to educators, parents, policymakers, and other interested individuals.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

Division of Undergraduate Education

Advanced Technological Education Program (ATE) promotes improvement in technological education at the undergraduate and secondary school levels by supporting curriculum development; the preparation and professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; internships and field experiences for faculty, teachers, and students; and other activities. Anticipated deadlines are April for preliminary proposals and October for formal proposals.

Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement Program (CCLI) seeks to improve the quality of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education for all students and targets activities affecting learning environments, course content, curricula, and educational practices. The program has three tracks: (1) Educational Materials Development, (2) Adaptation and Implementation of exemplary materials, laboratory experiences, and educational practices, and (3) National Dissemination. Laboratory equipment required to support project implementation is made available on a $1:$1 cost shared basis.

Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education (ESIE)  is designed to improve the educational experiences of all students in school settings - pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade - and to increase and improve the opportunities for all individuals to explore science, mathematics and technology beyond the school setting.

Instructional Materials Development supports the development of comprehensive curricula and supplementary materials that change classroom instruction.

Teacher Enhancement Program provides professional development opportunities to broaden and deepen the disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge of teachers, improving their ability to provide rich and challenging education in science, mathematics, and technology.

Program for Gender Equity in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology is committed to bringing about the needed change in education, and academic and professional climates, through increased awareness of the interests, needs, and capabilities of girls and women.

NATIONAL SKILL STANDARDS BOARD

The National Skill Standards Board is charged with “stimulating the development and adoption of a voluntary national system of skill standards” for 15 industry clusters. These are core and concentration skills that involve front line employees up through the first level of supervision.

Small Business Technology Transfer Program is a highly competitive three-phase program that awards development funding to small businesses in partnership with non-profit educational or scientific institutions to move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace.

Small Business Development Centers provide assistance to small businesses to promote growth, expansion and management improvement.

Smithsonian Institution

Smithsonian Institution is an educational complex composed of museums and research facilities. It does not distribute funds; however, a number of programs can support two-year colleges including visiting lectures, traveling exhibits, expanded opportunities for students, faculty, and staff development through internships and fellowships.

Center for Education and Museum Studies provides publications, teacher development programs, training and orientation for interns, information, and assistance for individuals interested in museum work.

Office of Fellowships and Grants encourages access to its collections, staff and references resources by visiting scholars, scientists, and students. Programs offer stipends for in-residence appointments for research and study.

Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service organizes and circulates exhibitions in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Host institutions are responsible for paying all fees and expenses related to exhibition.

Smithsonian Affiliations Program is among the newest form of Smithsonian national outreach. This program seeks to develop long-term affiliations with established non-profit educational museums and cultural organizations.

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan, federal institution established to: expand the body of knowledge about the nature of international peace; disseminate the knowledge to individuals involved in peacemaking; help educate the public; supplement the teaching of peace and conflict studies in college, university, and high school classrooms; and promote public discourse on issues of war and peace. The Technical Opportunities Program (TOP) formerly known as Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program (TIIAP), provides matching grants for projects that demonstrate how formal networks foster communication, resource-sharing, and economic development, help public safety officials protect the public, and assist in the delivery of health care and public health services. The anticipated annual deadline is March.

The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) awards matching grants to non-commercial entities for two basic types of projects; (1) Public broadcasting and (2) Nonbroadcast distance learning.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) seeks to facilitate the development and/or enhancement of innovative approaches to increasing the quality and quantity of participation in internationally-oriented curriculum development and international education opportunities. Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs  supports the development and implementation of new comprehensive, coherent, and successful bilingual or English-as-a-second-language programs and other special alternative instructional programs for limited English proficient students.

International Education and Graduate Programs Service promotes programs that enhance international studies, foreign language learning, area studies training, curriculum development, travel abroad, and research.

Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access provides grants to encourage use of electronic technologies for collecting and disseminating information for teaching and research about international education and foreign languages.

Institutional Development and Undergraduate Education Services Strengthening Institutions Programs (Title III) helps eligible colleges and universities strengthen their management, fiscal and instructional operations, as well as, plan, develop, or implement activities that will strengthen the institution.

TRIO - Higher Education Preparation and Support provides funds to identify, motivate, and assist low-income and first-generation students and students with disabilities to enter and complete postsecondary education programs.

  • Student Support Services provide academic support service, including instruction in basic skills, counseling, mentoring and or tutoring for low-income and first-generation students and student with disabilities who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a program of postsecondary education. The purpose of the program is to increase retention and graduation rates, and facilitate entrance into four-year college.

  • Talent Search projects provide the opportunity to work with young people who are least likely to be aware of postsecondary education options. The program includes counseling and academic support to continue school through high school graduation and enrollment into postsecondary education.

  • Upward Bound projects provide services for students 13 to 19 years old, who demonstrate skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education.

  • Upward Bound Math and Science Centers focus on intensified mathematics, science and other instruction for a six-week summer program for students who have completed the ninth grade and are low-income and first generation college students.

  • Educational Opportunity Centers provide assistance to adults who seek to enter or re-enter a postsecondary education program. Participants must reside in the area served by the Centers.

The Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program provides grants to effect long-range improvement in the infrastructure of science education programs at institutions with predominantly minority enrollment and to increase the representation of ethnic minorities, particularly minority women, in science and engineering careers.

FIPSE - Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education

Comprehensive Programs support innovative projects that focus on: Improving K–12 Teaching; Promoting Reform in Curriculum and Instruction; Designing More Cost-Effective Ways to Improve Instruction and Operations; Improving Access, Retention, and Completion. Collaboration, evaluation, and dissemination are also vital parts of projects.

Office of Vocational and Adult Education has 3 divisions: National Programs, Adult Education and Family Literacy, and Vocational-Technical Education.

Tech Prep Demonstration Project provides grants to enable consortia to carry out Tech Prep educational projects that involve the location of a secondary school on the site of a community college, a business as a member of the consortium, and the voluntary participation of secondary school students.

Indian Vocational Education Program supports the projects of Indian tribes and tribal organizations that provide secondary and postsecondary vocational education training for the benefit of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.

Office of Correctional Education coordinates all correctional education programs within the Department of Education and provides technical support to state and local correctional agencies and correctional education agencies.

Appalachian Regional Education Program offers help to build a better economy and an improved quality of life for the Appalachian Region and its inhabitants.

Community Technology Centers Program is to fund the start-up and expansion of community technology centers in distressed urban and rural communities.

English Literacy/Civics Program has funding available for both competitive grants and through state allocations targeting immigrants, providing services to improve English proficiency and helping new immigrants to enter the mainstream of community life in the U. S.

Adult Education and Literacy Act provides states with funding to teach English and civics to immigrants and others with limited English proficiency.

The Used Energy-Related Laboratory Equipment Grant Program awards grants of used energy-related laboratory equipment to universities and colleges for use in energy-oriented educational programs in the life, physical, and environmental sciences and engineering.

Community College Institutes places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any of ten different Department of Energy’s Laboratory locations, including Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Basic Nursing Education, Practice, and Retention Grants are awarded to strengthen and enhance the capacity for nurse education, practice and retention to address nursing shortage. This has been expanded to include retention as a result of the Nursing Reinvestment Act of 2002. Retention priorities include career ladder programs and assistance to individuals to obtain education and training in the nursing profession.

Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program is an educational initiative to ensure that today’s generation is prepared to become the transportation workforce of the 21st century. One component of the program includes community college partnerships which encompass: 1) developing educational programs for mid-career re-training of workers challenged by limited experience with computers or other technologies and 2) developing training programs for the new kind of technicians needed to install and maintain advanced transportation technologies.

Summer Intern Program For Diverse Groups provides internship opportunities to all students, but is designed to attract and promote entry of women, persons with disabilities, and members of diverse groups into transportation fields.
