Student Counseling Services
The purpose of Counseling Services is to provide academic, career and personal counseling to students. As part of the Student Success & Enrollment Managemnent (SSEM) Department. Our goals for Student Success are:
- To assist students to choose and exhibit behaviors that promotes mental health, reduce risky behavior and strengthen relationships.
- To help students develop caring attitudes and form authentic, mutually rewarding human relationships.
What we want for our students in Counseling Services:
- What we want students to know:
- themselves (skills, interests, goals, strengths, resources)
- how to assertively rather than aggressively or passively interact with instructors, other students and college staff
- academic success skills (time management, organizational skills, study skills)
- What we want students to be able to do:
- reframe negative circumstances so they can feel hope to continue learning
- exhibit communication skills with instructors, students and staff
- to be an actor rather than a victim
- take responsibility for both positive and negative outcomes
- interpret policies and procedures of the college and apply them to their own situations
- to effectively access college and community services and resources
- What we want students to feel, value or appreciate:
- self-confidence
- competent (that they can have an impact on the outcomes of their experience)
- characteristics of themselves and others
- value the investments others are making in them and their education
- value their won qualities and skills that contribute to their success
- recognize and appreciate the inter-relatedness of self and others in creating positive outcomes
Student Success Mission
The Student Success Department fosters student learning by providing quality services, programs and resources that facilitate successful transitions through college and cultivate student achievement of academic, career and life goals including the transition from college into the community workforce.
