Part-time Contract Employee Information
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSWD) hires qualified Sign language interpreters, TypeWell transcribers, and scribes. These professionals are considered part-time contract employees and must complete a Pellissippi State employment application. Contracts are evaluated and renewed each semester. Students must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for hire. The following list of items is required to submit an application.
- Pellissippi State Application (Human Resources)
- Personal Resume
- HS diploma or College transcripts
An Employment Application can be obtained from Human Resources or SSWD. Once the application, resume, and diploma or transcripts are submitted the applicant will be interviewed by an SSWD coordinator and a contract may or may not be offered. If a contract is offered and accepted, the applicant will participate is a short orientation session. A copy of the applicant's Social Security card and Driver's License will be made and additional forms, such as the W-4 and I-9, will be completed.
IMPORTANT: According to Immigration and Naturalization Service a birth certificate and a driver's license is documentation of identity and employment eligibility. However, for payroll purposes Human Resources (HR) requires an official Social Security card for paychecks to be issued. Paychecks will be held by the College until an official Social Security card is submitted.
General Job responsibilities include complying with PSTCC policies and SSWD procedures:
- Complete the Sexual Harassment Training.
- Sign and adhere to the SSWD Confidentiality Agreement.
- Abide by the Interpreter Procedure Agreement (interpreters only, RTF 58KB)
- Provide a reliable way for students and SSWD to contact you.
- Notify student / SSWD in a timely manner if unable to work.
- Contact SSWD if there are problems or concerns.
- Complete paper work on time and correctly, e.g. time sheets are due monthly on the 13th by 4:30pm (unless otherwise notified).
Interpreters are expected to abide by the following:
- NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Adhere to standards of confidential communication
- Possess the professional skills and knowledge required for the specific interpreting situation
- Conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the specific interpreting situation
- Demonstrate respect for consumers
- Demonstrate respect for colleagues, interns, and students of the profession
- Maintain ethical business practices
- Engage in professional development
TypeWell Transcribers are expected to abide by the following:
- TypeWell Transcriber's Code of Ethics
- Accurately transcribe the meaning of the spoken utterances made by individuals in the classroom or other transcribing situation
- Accurately voice comments and questions in reverse interpreting situations
- Not answer student questions about class content. The transcriber will instead facilitate communication between the instructor and student, by transcribing or voicing as needed
- Not offer opinions or input of any kind in classes and meetings, even if invited to do so by instructors or others
- Will keep strictly confidential all information learned in work settings
- Will accept only those assignments for which he or she possesses appropriate skills
- Will abide by the policies and procedures of the site or agency being served
- Will strive to continually improve his or her transcribing skills
Scribes are expected to abide by the following:
- Demonstrate professionalism
- Remain impartial and unobtrusive in the classroom
- Not elaborate on what is written for students
- Not counsel, advise, or interject opinions
- Maintain confidentiality
