During your studies at Pellissippi State, our goal is to encourage you to become an independent learner.  At the Division St. campus Learning Center, we provide help with difficulties in all stages in the writing process for all types of academic writing and in all stages of your journey to understanding math. The Learning Center receives its funding from student fees that you've already paid. Come early, come often, and sign in every time you sit with a tutor.  It's free! Tips for success with a writing tutor:

• Bring all materials related to your paper: your textbook, your Prentice Hall Reference Guide, the assignment sheet, and all drafts of your paper with your instructor's comments. Most importantly, bring an open mind, a recognition that writing is a process, not a product, and questions.
• Know what your thesis statement is. What is the main idea? Who is your audience? What is the goal for your reader?
• If you know you have trouble with grammar or organization, don't tell us you have trouble with "everything." Be as concrete as you can in describing your pattern of errors.

• A courteous and professional tutor has been hired to assist you.
• If no one is waiting, you can spend as much time as you want with a writing tutor. If a tutor is occupied with another student, expect a 5-15 minute wait.
• We will respond as readers, not error analysts.
• We will suggest areas that need to be improved and point out patterns of errors but not every error.

• Try to solve some of the problems before you arrive.
• Have some questions in mind when you arrive.

• If no one is waiting, you can spend as much time as you want with a math tutor.  If a tutor is occupied with another student, expect a 5-15 minute wait.
• If other students are working on the same section/chapter as you are, the tutor will work with a small group (2-3 people).
• A courteous and professional tutor has been hired to assist you.  In some cases, student tutors who have completed math courses at Pellissippi State will be available.
