Instructional Technology Workshops

Faculty/staff workshops are held in the Faculty Multimedia Studio (Goins 236 B). These are scheduled for faculty development, creating online courses, multimedia presentations and other uses of new media in instruction.

 

Browser/Computer Basics and Productivity

This workshop covers tips for using the FireFox browser and extensions, making use of keyboard shortcuts, and other time-saving tricks that will help you get things done faster and easier than before. If you feel that you’re not getting the most out of your browser, this workshop is for you!

Time: 60 minutes

 

D2L Introduction and Best Practices

This introduces participants to the D2L learning environment and covers using tools such as: email, class list, news items, course content, discussion forums, and the class list. Participants will create a welcome news item, post the class syllabus, and create a “getting to know you” discussion forum.

Time: 90 minutes

 

D2L Advanced Course Content

This workshop builds on the Introduction workshop but introduces the file manager and covers using multimedia, embedding content from other websites (such as Youtube and Twitter), and optimizing images to for online viewing.

Time: 60 minutes

 

D2L Grades

In this workshop, participants will build an entire grade book from a sample course syllabus.

Time: 60 minutes

 

D2L Assessments

This workshop covers creating exams and quizzes, setting up an automatic export to the grade book, creating quiz questions, and working with the question library. Participants will build a complete quiz from start to finish.

Time: 60 minutes

 

D2L Final Grades

In this brief refresher session, we will cover calculating and releasing final grades to students.

Time: 30 minutes

 

D2L For Hybrid & Enhanced Courses

This session focuses on creative ways to use D2L to enhance a traditional, face to face class. Learn best practices for encouraging participation and explore tools that can save you time as well!

Time: 60 minutes

 

Creating an Online Syllabus

A good electronic syllabus can enhance student outcomes, ease confusion and frustration, and encourage learning in ways a traditional syllabus can’t. In this workshop, participants will learn the 3 key parts of an online syllabus and also discuss how to easily create an interactive syllabus that presents information to students in an exciting new way that addresses different learning styles.

Time: 60 minutes

 

Making Your Course Content More Accessible

This workshop covers ways to increase accessibility and usability in your online course. Learn about the best file formats to use and take a look at some easy-to-use templates that make your content more aesthetically pleasing and also more accessible.

Time: 90 minutes

 

Adding Audio to Your Online Course

In this workshop, participants will learn how to record, edit, and post audio files to a D2L course. Audio files can be a great way to add some personality to your online course, produce mini-lectures for your students, or explain a particularly difficult topic that you didn't’t have time to cover in class.

Time: 90 minutes

 

Adding Video to Your Online Course

This session introduces participants to the world of digital video. Using relatively simple tools, we will record a video greeting for your students, edit the video using Premiere Elements (available in the Faculty Multimedia Studio), and post the final result to a D2L course.

Image Editing Basics

Participants in this workshop will learn image editing basics and cover some common tasks such as resizing, cropping, and editing an image while we build a course banner and create a profile photo.

Time: 90 minutes

 

Respondus 4.0 - Getting Started

If you used Respondus with WebCT, then you’ll be happy to know that version 4.0 allows you to easily import/export quizzes to and from D2L! This workshop covers the basics of using Respondus to create and manage your quizzes.

Time: 60 minutes

 

D2L Intelligent Agents

The Intelligent Agent tool in D2L offers a quick and easy way to get alerts and notifications when students are not participating in your class. Participants in this session will take a brief through the tool options and setup their first Agent.
