I. Materials needed:
1. Textbook
-
If your book is missing it's formula card, call or email immediately
and I will send you one. You can also get a copy off of the publisher's
website at:
http://media.pearsoncmg.com/aw/aw_triola_elemstats_9/pdfs/tes09_po.pdf
2. STATDISK
manual
3. STATDISK program (CD should be in the back of your textbook;
return to Bookstore if not); if this CD is not the 9.6 version, download
from http://wps.aw.com/aw_triola_stats_series
4. Student Solution manual (optional, but strongly recommended)
5. Pencil/eraser for tests and STATDISK (and optional
homework)
6. Two pocket folders (one for Statdisk; one for homework,
if you decide to turn in for extra credit. See IV below.)
7. Scientific calculator that
can compute 2-variable statistics (or linear regression) with the calculator
instruction manual. A graphics calculator will be fine, if
you already own or can borrow one. If you must purchase a calculator, a
small non-graphics calculator is fine. Remember to look for the 2-variable
statistics or linear regression capabilities. You might want to call me
first if you need to purchase a calculator. I can loan you a TI-82 for
the semester if desired; call or email me. There are directions
in this website for the necessary statistictical computations in this course
for many types of graphics
calculators. If you are not using a graphics calculator, read the instructions
for statistical computations in your calculator's manual.
8. VT Section of course: Complete set of video tapes
- check out from Media Center, GN 241.
II. Completing Tests
1. Tests must be completed in pencil, and as the saying
goes, 'Neatness counts!'.
2. All test answers must be verified as your own
work; this means you must show all the work required to obtain your answers.
Calculator work does not have to be shown - but the set up of the problem
and/or formula substitutions must be shown. Answers given without
proper work will not receive full credit. This work must be neat
and numbered wherever you put it. (I do not intend to go on a 'scavenger
hunt' for the proof of your answers.)
3. Partial credit will be given for incorrect answer if
the work is shown. The number of points will be determined by the severity
of the error(s).
III. Suggested
Text Assignments can be turned in for extra credit.
(This is ):
The only way students may
receive extra credit points for the course will be by turning in completed
suggested text assignments (including the review assignments). The optional
homework problems will be accepted no later than the day the STATDISK exercises
are due. The number of extra credit points given will be determined by
the number of completed problems in each assignment.
The number of extra
credit points may not exceed three average points of the total grade.
The format of the Optional
Homework is described at the beginning of the Assignment
Lists.
IV.
STATDISK Assignments
The computer program that accompanies the textbook, STATDISK,
along with the accompanying STATDISK Manual, are used for the required
computer assignments in this course. See the STATDISK
Assignment List for these required assignments. The computer
assignments will count as one grade in this course. See the Point
Sheet for grade computation.
V. Required
Writing Project.
VI. Attendance Policy (regular class only;
not applicable to VT or WW sections): Per college policy in current
catalog, students must attend 75% of the scheduled class days to receive
a passing grade.
VII. Final Grade
1. I do NOT drop the lowest grade as is done in
some courses. However, I do count the highest test grade twice (up to 100
points) . See Point
Sheet.
2. The midterm (which is optional)
may be used to replace a missing or low exam grade. However, this grade
can only replace missing or low exam grades over which the exam covers
(Chapters 1-5); or the required comprehensive
final may be used to replace any missing or low exam grade. However,
only one exam grade may be replaced by the midterm or the final.
The midterm score or the final score cannot be used to replace a
STATDISK or Writing Project grade.
3. The final exam is a required score. A student
will receive an I (incomplete) grade for the course without this score
until this exam is completed.
4. The total number of extra credit points added to your
grade (via turning in the Homework) may not exceed three average points.
VIII. Academic Dishonesty Policy
The instructor reserves the option to give a failing grade for the
course to any student found participating in any form of academic dishonesty
(known as 'cheating', such as but not limited to copying another student's
work on exams or STATDISK, providing work to another student, plagarism,
etc.) on any required assignment for this course.
