MATH 1530
VT1 Course Guidelines

    2.   Exam Policies
Exams for the VT1 sections of MATH 1530 must be taken by the deadline dates indicated on the Test Calendar. There are no makeup exams.   For any missed exam, the student will receive a 0. See instructions below on how to replace a missing exam (0) grade.

Students may choose to take any exam with the instructor on the optional exam dates indicated on the calendar.  A review period will be provided, beginning at 6:00 pm, and the exam will start usually aroung 7:00 pm.  Otherwise the exam must be taken at the Testing Center on the Pellissippi campus. If a student wishes to take an exam at a different campus Testing Center, contact the instructor the week before the exam deadline.

The PSTCC Testing Centers require a picture ID (such as a driver's license) to take any exam. You will not need an authorization slip. You need only to tell the Test Attendant my name, course name, which chapter computer exam you want to take, and your name. Your should always check the hours for the Testing Center you will be using.  PSTCC Testing Centers do not stay open late, even if students are not through with their exams.

CAUTION:  The main campus Testing Center becomes VERY CROWDED as each test deadline approaches.  On occasion, especially near the end of the semester, students who have waited until the 'last hour' to go to the Testing Center were unable to get in because the Testing Center was completely full.  This situation will NOT constitute an excusable reason for missing an exam.  PLAN CAREFULLY AND WISELY as to when you will be taking these computer exams.  Do NOT wait until the 'last minute'.

Missed Exam Policy A zero ('0') will be recorded for any exam not taken by the designated exam date. Students may use the optional midterm or the required final to replace one (and only one) missing grade. (See Instructor's Guidelines, III.2.)

    3.  Returning graded materials
I will mail you all graded course work through the USPS mail.  Each mailing will contain the test, STATDISK exercises, and optional homework for each exam.  Please open the mail envelope carefully without tearing; return it to me in the STATDISK folder the next time you turn it in.  I will use the same mail envelope several times.

    3. Contacting the instructor for help or any other reasonable request
     a) Students may call during any hour indicated on my schedule for help or to set up an appointment. Because of other college responsibilites, I may not always be available when you call.  Please leave a message, phone number(s) and times when I can reach you. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

     b) You may also contact me by email.  If you are using PSTCC Webmail, my address is CSLAYDEN.  If you are using the internet, my address is CSLAYDEN@PSTCC.EDU.  Or you may use the email link on any of these website pages.

Contacting you - I will often send out messages to you on the your PSTCC email account - at least one before each exam;  you must check your email messages regularly in order to be successful in this course. Use the College WebMail to access your email account.

    4.  Video Tapes
The instructor has made a set of videos to complement this course. Students enrolled in the VT section should check out for the semester a complete set of the videos from the Media Center, GN 241, on the main campus.  The complete set of tapes are due back to the Media Center by the day of the final exam.  The Media Center will inform you of the penalties and fines for failure to return.

A complete set of the videos is available in the Learning Centers at each campus and at the Media Center (GN 241) at the main campus. You may view these tapes in these centers.

    5.  Hints to succeed in this course
And last, but not least, staying on task are the key words for this type of course. You cannot start reading the text and/or starting the homework problems for the first time the evening before the exam and expect to do well on the exam. Statistics is like any mathematics course it must be absorbed at a slow, but steady pace, with lots of practice (that is, completing the homework) in between reading the material.
