Work Study and Other Assistance

Federal Work-Study Program

The Federal Work-Study Program provides part-time jobs to students who have financial need as determined by the federal formula. Jobs are available on campus in such areas as the library, laboratories, maintenance department, and faculty and administrative offices. Students are normally awarded the opportunity to earn $1,500 per semester.

Eligibility for New Applicants

  • Must be eligible as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Must be making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Must have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or better.

Work assignments are made by the Financial Aid Office. Work contracts are signed by both the student and supervisor. The student must complete and submit a W-4 and I-9 form (Employment Eligibility Verification). This, with the Social Security card and driver's license, must be brought to the Financial Aid Office. Time sheets and payroll information will be given to the student at that time. Student must not begin work until officially assigned and all paperwork is completed. Application Procedures:

America Reads Challenge Program

The goal of the America Reads Challenge Program is to ensure that every American child can read well and independently by the end of the third grade. Any Pellissippi State student who is eligible for Federal Work Study through the Financial Aid Office and has a 2.5 GPA or better may be eligible to participate in the America Reads Challenge. Pellissippi State places federal work study students into elementary schools to work as reading tutors. Responsibilities include working one-on-one or with small groups of children on reading and reading readiness activities. Tutors are required to participate in a training session before starting work. The training sessions cover basic reading skills such as phonics, whole language, games development, and reading readiness activities. Based on your financial aid eligibility, students may be able to work up to 20 hours a week.
