Foundation Office Strategic Goals

July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2010

The work of the Pellissippi State Foundation contributes to completion of the College's strategic planning goals for 2005 to 2010:

College Goal 1: LEADERSHIP: The College will promote and communicate to constituents the value of the institution's educational programs and related services in order to further economic development and quality of life.

College Goal 2: ACCESS TO LEARNING: The College will provide access to higher education to the diverse population of its service area.

College Goal 3: QUALITY: The College will continually strive to improve the quality of instructional programs it offers to students and to enhance the environment that supports its employees through improved avenues of communication, increased opportunities for professional development and equitable compensation.

College Goal 4: RESOURCEFULNESS: The College will manage, support, develop and foster accountability for financial, human, physical and information resources to respond to the interests and needs of the community and students.

Foundation Office Goals

The Foundation Office goals and the objectives for completion of the College goals are as follows:

Goal 1: Provide private funds to support Pellissippi State Technical Community College in pursuit of its five-year strategic goals and benchmarks

Enhance access to students

  • Increase the number of new Foundation scholarships by 5% over five years
  • Market scholarships to assure distribution of available funds
  • Support the National Science Foundation program for Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS). This grant supports scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the high-technology workforce following completion of a degree in one of these areas.

Enhance recognition programs

  • Increase Foundation support for employee recognition programs by increasing the cash prizes for the Innovations and Gene Joyce Visionary awards from $1000 to $1500 each, making the awards equal in value to the Excellence in Teaching Award

Develop funding for capital projects

  • Construct new or renovate current facilities at the Blount County Center
  • At the Pellissippi Campus, complete the renovation project for the Goins Administration Building, the new academic building for Media Technologies, and the expansion of the physical plant building.

Provide cultural and social opportunities to the population of its service area

  • Increase private funding to support the Performing Arts Center activities by 10% during the next five years
  • Establish a Community Room at the Magnolia Avenue Campus
  • Conduct cultural-related fundraising events

Contribute to College programs to offset declining contributions from the State of Tennessee

  • Increase private giving to the Pellissippi State Foundation by 10 percent over the five-year period from 2005 to 2010.
  • Establish an endowed chair
  • Increase contributions to the Greatest Need Fund to give the College greater flexibility in meeting essential needs

Goal 2 Increase fundraising through unrestricted donations and endowments

Develop a comprehensive development strategy

  • Begin conducting a year-end campaign
  • Identify donors and/or spouses who work for companies that match gifts
  • Focus on securing major gifts from current donors
  • Develop a planned giving strategy
  • Develop strategies to recruit new donors
  • Target technology firms, private foundations, or other organizations for major donations
  • Analyze data collected in the donor database to identify trends in giving

Develop Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs

  • Establish a Web site on planned giving
  • Establish dollar amounts associated with named giving

Enhance donor recognition

  • Expand awareness of Annual and Cumulative Giving Recognition Societies
  • Develop a plan for focusing on retention of donors and moving them through the giving levels in the recognition societies

Goal 3 Increase the Foundation’s involvement and visibility in the community

Host special events focused on friend-raising

  • Plan at least one event per county per year
  • Offset costs through sponsorships and other in-kind gifts
  • Recruit more volunteers to help with the event
  • Focus on bringing in new donors (“friend-raising”)

Build a strong and active Alumni Program

  • Increase alumni giving
  • Publish newsletters for donors, alumni, and friends
  • Host an annual reunion for alumni, retired faculty and staff, and other friends of the College

Develop a marketing plan to keep the Pellissippi State Foundation visible in the community

  • Increase Foundation publicity
  • Develop a new Foundation Web site targeted to increasing donations from alumni and friends
  • Promote and publicize scholarship opportunities
  • Work more closely with faculty to identify potential scholarship recipients
  • Run advertisements explaining opportunities for planned giving
  • Promote and lobby for the College at community functions and events

Goal 4 Develop an effective fundraising organization

Increase Board of Trustees knowledge of the College and its needs

  • Plan College presentations of interest to board members at most board meetings
  • Review the orientation program for new board members and update as needed
  • Increase board participation in College events (such as at in-service, graduation, alumni events, and presentations by faculty and staff)

Increase Board involvement in fundraising events

  • Involve every board member in fundraising projects
  • Encourage every board member to make a leadership gift by pledging or donating to the annual fund

Improve Board communication and understanding of its role

  • Review the charter, bylaws, and policies of the Foundation annually and revise as needed
  • Develop programs and activities for board members
  • Increase board attendance, participation, and expectations (such as through a mentoring program for new board members)
  • Involve every board member in Foundation work as a participating member of at least one board committee
  • Develop and implement a board evaluation process; perform self-evaluation

Goal 5 Begin work on a Major Gifts Campaign

Develop an overall fundraising plan for the campaign

  • Complete a feasibility study
  • Develop the mission and purpose of the campaign
  • Develop the solicitation methodology
  • Set the campaign calendar
  • Identify campaign management responsibilities of the campaign consultant and the Foundation Board
  • Budget and plan for marketing and promotional materials
  • Establish a communications plan

Use the results of the feasibility study to set specific fundraising goals for the campaign

  • Target giving by individuals by soliciting gifts from alumni, friends, and Foundation Board members
  • Solicit targeted corporations, businesses, and organizations
  • Plan fundraising events that have specific fundraising goals
  • Identify endowment goals for the campaign
  • Identify Planned Giving goals for the campaign
  • Plan donor recognition for the campaign

Raise funds for critical needs

  • Develop a case for support of capital needs
  • Develop a case for support of program needs
  • Develop a case for support of endowment needs
  • Develop a case for support for unrestricted donations to the Greatest Need Fund
