Periodical Databases 2
|
What is a periodical database?
A periodical database is a frequently updated collection of citations to articles
from magazines, newspapers, and journals.
The orderly arrangement of materials in the database makes it possible to
quickly search a very large number of articles for specific topics, titles,
authors, etc.
Databases generally provide information about the original article,
and sometimes an abstract or the full text of the article
Which periodical databases are available at Pellissippi State
Library?
The Pellissippi State Library has access to a variety of Tennessee
Electronic Library (TEL) periodical databases. Some of these databases
are general in scope such as Academic OneFile, while others
are more subject oriented such as Health and Wellness Resource Center.
In addition to the TEL databases, there are also subject-specific
databases such as psycArticles, bioDigest and Social Sciences Full
Text.
How do I reach the periodical databases?
On the library's homepage, select a database title from an alphabetical
list (Databases A-Z)
or from a subject arrangement (Databases by Subject)
To access the databases from off-campus, you will need to log-in so
that the system will recognize you as an authorized PSTCC user.
Click on the Off-Campus Log In link to bring up the Restricted Access screen. You will need to enter your PSTCC username
and password. More information about username and password is
available at
http://www.pstcc.edu/departments/itsc/webmail.html. Once you provide that information you will be
able to connect to the databases and other online resources.
Special note about the information to follow!
In the remainder of this tutorial section you will learn to use some of the
many features of Academic OneFile, a general TEL database, and one you will use for much of your college research. This is a very popular
database and will more than likely be available at other college libraries.
