Library Services strives to provide an environment conducive to study and research for all library users. In order to maintain such an environment, all patrons are expected to behave reasonably, use the facilities and resources appropriately, and to respect others. Food, drinks, and the use of tobacco products are not permitted in library areas.
Study Environment
- Reference and Circulation Desk Areas (1st floor). Quiet conversation is acceptable in these first floor areas but everyone is expected to keep their voices low so as not to disturb others nearby. Noise can be expected in areas where library staff members are helping library users and in the hallway from people passing through the building. If you need a place for quieter study, please move to the second floor library areas.
- Quiet Study Areas (2nd floor). Second floor library areas (with the exception of the group study rooms) are designated for quiet study. There should be very minimal conversation in these areas. Please let the librarian at the reference desk (865-539-7107) know if you are disturbed by intrusive conversation or other noise from within these areas.
- Group Study Rooms (1st & 2nd floors). If your group of two or more needs a location for group interaction and discussion, reserve a group study room at the Reference Desk.
- Radios, CD players, and similar devices should not be used without personal earphones. Even with earphones, if the sound is audible to those around you, you will be asked to turn the volume down or turn the device off.
- Turn cell phones and paging devices off (or to vibrate mode) in all library areas. Step into the hallway or outside to make or receive phone calls. Cell phone use is not permitted in any library area.
- Always let the librarian at the Reference Desk know if you are disturbed by the inappropriate behavior of others while using library facilities.
Research Environment
- Computer workstations available in the Library Reference area and in the second floor library stacks areas are designated for research use only. Facilities for e-mail and word-processing are available to students in the Open Computer Lab (3rd floor).
- Access to reference resources in print format and to electronic library resources is available in the Reference Room (1st floor). A librarian is available at the reference desk if you need assistance in using these resources.
