  • ARTstor is a non-profit initiatiave, founded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with a mission to use digital technology to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields."  The collection contains hundreds of thousands of digital images from across many time periods and cultures, drawn from museums, archaeological teams, photo archives, and art reference publishers.

  • The Dictionary of Art. 34 volumes Jane Turner, editor. New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996. REF N31. D5 1996. This monumental resource contains more than 41,000 articles and 15,000 illustrations in a comprehensive survey on visual arts topics. It includes biographies, historical entries, artistic styles, movements, schools, as well as articles on the materials and techniques or art. The work is international in scope and includes contributions from 6700 scholars.

  • Contemporary Artists. 2 vols. Sara Pendergast and Tom Pendergast, editors. Farmington Hills, MI: St. James Press, 2002. REF N6490. C6527 2002.  Provides profiles of 850 significant contemporary artists, most of whom have worked after 1960.

  • International Dictionary of Art and Artists. James Vinson, editor.  Chicago: St. James Press, 1990.  REf N40 .I55 1990.  This dictionary covers the 13th -20th centuries. Volume 1, Artists, divides each article into four parts: career, public and private collections, subject bibliographies of works on the artist, and a critical essay of the artist's work.  Volume 2, Art, contains critical essays on 500 individual works of art.

  • Encyclopedia of Artists. 6 vols. William Vaughan, editor. New York: Oxford University Press, 2000. REF N31. E53 2000. Volumes 1-5 contain detailed information about the life and work of more than 200 artists. Volume 6 contains illustrated articles on principal artistic styles and movements of the lst 1000 years.

  • Using Internet Primary Sources to Teach Critical Thinking Skills in Visual Arts. Eyerdam, Pamela J. Westport, Conn: Libraries Unlimited, 2003. REF N380 .E95 2003 Pages 28-38 contain suggested web sites of primary source directories for images and art history information.

  • National Gallery of Art: index of American design

  • CAA: College Art Association (http://www.collegeart.org) - Includes newsletters, conferences, job opportunities, and grant information.
