Access Science  - electronic version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.  Includes science news and related websites concerning life and physical sciences, as well as information on engineering, mathematics, and technology.

BioDigest  (OCLC)-lengthy abstracts (digests) of scientific articles written in a non-technical style

General Science Full Text General Science Full Text indexes and abstracts articles from English-language popular science magazines as well as professional journals.  Subjects covered include Astronomy, Atmospheric Science, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environment, Genetics, Mathematics, Medicine, Microbiology, Nutrition, Oceanography, Physics, Physiology, and Zoology   

Knovel Engineering & Scientific Online  Provides full-text of engineering reference books and also contains books on civil, chemical, and mechanical engineering, as well as metallury, biology, and food science.

Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences The Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences has 3000 peer-reviewed articles in "contemporary biology, highighting structures, across the biological and biomedical sciences". It includes 6000 color illustrations, cross references, and suggestions for further reading.

Oxford Reference Online - provides searchable access to 100 dictionary and reference titles published by Oxford Press including A Dictionary of Biology, A Dictionary of Ecology, A Dictionary of Plant Sciences, A Dictionary of Scientists, and A Dictionary of Zoology. 

To access databases from off-campus computers: Enter your general computer account username and password (used for PSTCC e-mail).  NOTE: Enter your username in this format example: s_jmdoe. It is not necessary to add "@pstcc.edu" for this application.


Journals and Magazines 

The following journals are available at the Pellissippi library in the Reference area. Many journals now have websites, providing the table of contents and access to selected articles in the current printed journal. Many include additional information and resources in certain subjects. You may also browse by subect in the Journal Index found on the Library homepage to find a list of full-text Biology journals in Pellissippi databases.

Facts on File Dictionary of Biology. 3rd edition. Robert Hine, editor. New York: Facts on File, 1999. REF QH 302.5 F38 1999. Contains 3300 definitions of biological terms and  has an appendix with charts of the animal and plant kingdoms.

The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner, eds.  Detroit: Gale . REF Q 121 .G35 2004 This six volume set covers all scientific disciplines including life sciences.

Henderson's Dictionary of Biological Terms. 11th edition. Eleanor Lawrence. New York: John Wiley and Sons, 1995. REF QH 302.5 H65 1995 The definitions in this book have been expanded to accommodate new techniques and ideas in biology. Classifications of plants and animals and chemical elements and structures are included.

World of Biology.  Kimberley A. McGrath, editor. Detroit: Gale Group, 1999. REF QH 302.5.W671999. Contains 1034 entries with bold-faced cross-references to related topics. This volume also contains a "sources consulted" list for further information as well as a historical chronology of events in the biological sciences.
