African American Almanac. Estell, Kenneth. Detroit: Gale Research, 2003. REF E 185.5 .N34 2003. A comprehensive reference work on African Americans. Information is arranged in twenty-seven subject chapters. A bibliography, list of publishers, and a name/keyword index are provided.

African American Encyclopedia

6 volumes. Williams, Michael W. New York: Marshall Cavendish, 1993. REF E 185 .A253 1993. This set features both brief and long entries on people, organizations, landmarks, religion, politics, and other facets of African American life and culture. Longer articles contain bibliographic references. The last volume includes several tables of additional information and an index.

African American Lives. NY: Oxford University Press, 2004.  Ref 185.96. A446 2004. Includes biographical sketches spanning over four centuries.

Black Women In America. 3 volumes. Hine, Darlene C., edit. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2005. REF E 185.86 .B542 2005 . This encyclopedia includes both biographical and broad subject essays which provide information on the contributions o f African American women to American life. Profiles range from seventeenth-century slave women to contemporary figures. The third volume contains a comprehensive index.

Encyclopedia of African American Culture and History. 6 volumes.  Palmer, Colin. edit. Detroit: Macmillan Reference USA, 2006. REF E 185 .E54 2006 .  Illustrated encyclopedia covering all aspects of the African American experience.  Entries are alphabetically arranged with numerous cross-references.

Statistical Record of Black America. Smith, Jessie Carney. Detroit: Gale Research Inc., 1997. REF E 185.5 .S83 1997. Statistical data from a variety of sources. Tables are arranged in broad subject categories, i.e."Education", "Housing", and "Population". There is a list of the reference sources used and an index at the end of the volume.
