Let’s get physical: family of dance instructors demonstrates rumba, swing and more
Imagine yourself on TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” gliding and sliding around the dance floor like ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi or football great Emmitt Smith.
Now do a quick reality check.
No, you probably won’t live that dream, but you can see professional dancers live and in-person performing those same dances, when instructors from the local Dance Dimensions studio take the balloon festival stage Friday, September 26, at 4 p.m.
Instructors Rhonda and Mark Becker and their son, J.W., accompanied by some of their advanced students, will demonstrate all the right moves of such dance styles as the waltz, tango, foxtrot, cha-cha, rumba and swing.
Besides performing, the instructors will share the history of the dances—the tango, from Argentina; the rumba, from Cuba; the pasodoble, from Spain….
According to Rhonda Becker, a former national ice skating champion, the classical dances continue to attract new students.
“Many younger people are registering for classes and private dance lessons. We’ve seen a real increase in the 20-something crowds.”
Rhonda and Mark Becker are certified ballroom dance instructors and actively competing professionals. They were awarded the Bronze Medal at the 2004 USA Dance National Championships in Minneapolis.
Dance Dimensions, which is owned by Drs. Philip and Ann Carter, is Knoxville’s oldest independent dance studio.
