Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants awards scholarship to Pellissippi State graduate

weaverPellissippi State graduate Jonathan Weaver has earned a $1,100 scholarship from the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Weaver graduated this spring with a business transfer degree, concentrating in accounting, He is continuing on at the University of Tennessee, and if history is any indicator, he will use his time there to help others.

“Jonathan is just a great student who loves learning and wants to share his knowledge,” said his former instructor, Lisa Bogaty, an associate professor in Business and Computer Technology.

Weaver was a tutor while at Pellissippi State, and he helped students in both math and English.

“Tutoring helped me help others,” he said, “by giving them that extra push toward making the good grades they knew they could make—somebody by their side to tell them, ‘You can do this class. Everything’s fine.’”

Weaver not only came to the aid of other students, but he also was able to help his mother’s office learn Excel 2007.

“I would learn some cool things [at school]. When I came home, I could show my mom some easier ways to do applications in Excel.”

Weaver was one of 140 recipients of the CPA society scholarship from across the state. Accounting students from 28 Tennessee colleges and universities vied for the awards. Applicants had to have an accounting grade point average of 3.80 and an overall GPA of 3.76.
