Constitution Day:
Pellissippi State presents play about John and Abigail Adams
In celebration of Constitution Day, Pellissippi State invites the public to two free presentations of “Patriots and Lovers: The Love Story of John and Abigail Adams.”
The performances are September 16 at 7 p.m. and September 17 at 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
John and Abigail Adams have been dubbed the “Romeo and Juliet” of the American Revolution. Their prolific correspondence has allowed generations a peek at the passion they had for each other as well as the country to which they helped give birth.
The story covers four years (1774-1777) in the famous couple’s life and stars nationally touring actor Gary Anderson and well-known local actress Elizabeth Attaway.
The play is being brought to campus by American Legends Theatre Works. The troupe is crisscrossing the country with five different plays this fall, stopping in Vermont, Montana, California, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
The event is sponsored by Student Life and Recreation and Liberal Arts.
In addition to portraying John Adams as part of the Constitution Day festivities, Gary Anderson will appear in a benefit performance for the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where a gunman shot and killed two people July 27.
Anderson will perform “Clarence Darrow: The Search for Justice” at 7 p.m. September 17 at TVUUC. Darrow and William Jennings Bryan were opposing attorneys in the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial” in Dayton.
For more information on “Patriots and Lovers,” call 694-6555. To learn more about the benefit performance, call TVUUC at 523-4176.
