Title: Professor, English

Major responsibilities: Teaching English composition and American literature

Length of service at the College: Two years as an adjunct (1988-90) and 18 years full time (1990-present)

Place of birth: Maryville

Family members: Husband, Clyde (middle school guidance counselor); daughter, Lee (playwright and director); and son, John (professional rock climber and wilderness guide)

Something no one knows about you: In elementary school I won first prize (a transistor radio) in a national coloring contest sponsored by Kellogg Cereals.

Greatest achievement or proudest moment: My children.

Favorite things outside work: I rehabilitate orphaned and injured wildlife and serve as a volunteer interpreter at 18th century Ramsey House.

Most rewarding part of your job: Sharing history and literature with young people.

Most influential person in your life and why: My paternal grandmother: she was strong, loving and gracious, with a sharp sense of humor and a ton of common sense.
