Bluegrass band debuts at Pellissippi State concert April 2

Hardin Valley Thunder, the College’s brand new bluegrass ensemble, will make its official debut Thursday, April 2.

The Jazz Band also will perform, and the audience is sure to be wowed by the variety of music at the Jazz Band and Bluegrass Ensemble Concert.

The public is invited to the free performance, which takes place at 7 p.m. in the Clayton Performing Arts Center.

“This group has been added to the ensemble offerings to assist our students in exploring a style of music that embraces our local Appalachian heritage,” said Bill Brewer, Music program coordinator.

Larry Vincent, director of Hardin Valley Thunder, says the audience can look forward to some Alison Krauss and Hank Williams, as well as such classic pieces as “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and “Soldier’s Joy.”

“This music is played all around the world,” said Brewer. “Most of the great players came from this area—East Tennessee and Kentucky. It makes perfect sense to have this new ensemble.”

Tom Johnson, Music adjunct faculty member, will lead the Jazz Band.
“We are going to have guest trombonist Don Hough,” Johnson said, “and a few community members will be performing with the band as well.”

“Jive Samba,” “Sandu,” “Girl Watching” and “Big Bertha” are among the music.
