Pellissippi State offers free GED preparation and practice test
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— September 22, 2008
The Adult Education Program at Pellissippi State Technical Community College provides free GED preparation Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m., for adults ages 18 and over who would like to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Individuals who are 17 years of age may participate with an attendance waiver from their high school.
The program uses small group or individualized instruction, computer tutorials, videotapes and a variety of printed materials to help participants achieve their personal, educational and career goals.
The GED opens doors to a brighter, more satisfying future: people with a GED or high school diploma earn approximately $7,500 more a year than workers with less than a high school education.
About 70 percent of adults in Tennessee who take the GED pass it, according to Joan Newman, director of the Learning and Testing Center at Pellissippi State, but only 1.6 percent of all adults who did not graduate from high school even try.
Newman encourages all area adults who have been thinking about pursuing a GED to come to the college and take the free GED Official Practice Test. The practice exam provides a reliable estimate of actual GED test scores, and participants who meet the minimum score requirement are eligible to take the GED test for half-price.
A fast track program (16-24 hours) is available for those who need minimal instruction to prepare for the GED. It is possible for students to take the Official Practice Test on a Thursday, then take the GED test the following Saturday.
Day and evening hours are available to accommodate the scheduling needs of adults. There are three main preparation sites in Knoxville (northeast, west and downtown).
To register for the free Official Practice Test or to learn more, please call (865) 539-7109.
