Follow instructions on pp. 34-35 of Lab Manual for BioLabs On-Line, #1a-c. You should determine the genotype of each individual in the pedigree (for those individuals who possess a dominant trait, look at their parents and children; if either of these expresses the recessive trait, the individual in question MUST be a heterozygote; otherwise, use A_ to indicate that the second allele is unknown.
You will submit three pedigrees for the ALS gene.
Next, you will select one other disease from the list. Read the description of the disease and analyze 10 pedigrees. (Include the genotype of each individual in the pedigrees.) Select one pedigree that best exemplifies the inheritance of this gene for presentation to the class.
You will submit:
1. Three ALS pedigrees with genotypes
indicated.
2. Ten pedigrees of your selected disease,
with genotypes indicated.
3. Indicate which of the ten pedigrees
best depicts the mode of inheritance (copies will be made for class members
and shared at a research conference).
4. A brief (2-3 sentences) description
of the disease characteristics and mode of inheritance.
Information that should assist in interpreting pedigrees:
Autosomal recessive traits
skip generations
unaffected parents
produce affected children
trait shows up in consanguineous
marriage (close relatives)
Autosomal dominant traits
no affected children
without at least one affected parent
does not skip generations
seen in about half
the offspring of affected individuals
X-linked recessive
seen more often in
males
skips generations
trait is passed from
maternal grandfather to grandson; not expressed in mother
(she is carrier)
never passed father
to son
X-linked dominant
father passes to all
of his daughters, none of his sons
mother passes to half
of children, both sons and daughters
Y-linked
found only in males
father passes to all
of his sons
