Essay questions are evaluated as follows:

An ‘A' answer is well organized, grammatically correct, and includes specific details.  Shows an exceptional mastery of the topic and demonstrates critical thinking.  All information is correct; examples are given and explained where appropriate.

A ‘B' answer is well organized and grammatically correct.  Shows a solid mastery of the topic and demonstrates some ability to apply knowledge in a new situation.  All information is correct; some details and examples are provided.

A ‘C' answer is organized and for the most part, grammatically correct.  Shows an average mastery of the topic, including all the main points (big picture).  May  lack details, or focus in detail on only one aspect of the topic.  Shows ability to think through situations similar to those covered in class.  Examples and details may be absent or sketchy.

A ‘D' answer lacks organization, may have grammatical errors, and lacks some of the important points.  May contain incorrect information as well.  Lacks details and examples, shows lack of application of topics discussed in class to a new situation.  May not answer the question fully.

An ‘F' answer has grammatical errors, poor organization, and serious lack of information or errors in the information presented.  May not address the question being considered.
