Learning Object Repository

The Learning Object Repository (LOR) allows instructors to create and share learning resources between D2L courses. This tutorial shows how to publish information to the LOR, search for shared objects, and retrieve information from it.

Publishing Material to the LOR

Publishing from Course Content

You are able to publish Modules, Topics, and even entire courses from within Course Content. Additionally, any resources (images, CSS files, etc.) linked to your published HTML files will also be added to the repository!

  1. Access the course that has the materials you want to publish.
  2. Click on the Course Content button.
  3. Click on the Publish to LOR button next to the module or topic you want to publish. Selecting the LOR button at the top of the page publishes everything.
  4. Next, select the option to Create a New Object, choose whether or not you want to the object to be visible to others, and click Next. You can also edit the metadata for any of your modules and topics by clicking on the meta icon. Entering metadata is optional but will make it easier for other users to find your objects.
  5. On the next screen, you have the option to add any additional files to the object. Click Publish once you've verified all of the necessary files are included.

Publishing Assets

In the above example we learned how to publish courses, topics, and modules. However, there may be times when you only need to publish an individual resource - such as a PDF or image file. The process for publishing assets such as this is very similar to what we just did. Let's take a look!

  1. Access the course that has the asset you want to publish.
  2. Access the Files area by either going to Course Content > Manage Files or Edit Course > Manage Files.
  3. Select the file that you want to copy to the LOR then click the Publish to LOR button.
  4. Next, select the option to Create a New Object, choose whether or not you want to the object to be visible to others, and click Next. You can also edit the metadata for any of your modules and topics by clicking on the meta icon. Entering metadata is optional but will make it easier for other users to find your objects.
  5. You're finished! Your file is now part of the LOR.

Searching for Objects in the LOR

  1. To import an object into your course, you'll need to search the LOR from the course that you want to inport the materials into. You can search the LOR from either Course Contents or Manage Files. In this example, we will search from within Course Content. Click on the Add Learning Object button at the top of the content area.
  2. Click on the Search button and either enter a keyword in the search field or leave it blank to see a list of all resources. Click Search.

Importing from the LOR

  1. Once you've found an object that you want to import, select the item and click the Next button.
  2. You are given three options for including the object in your course. Create a Dynamic Link is useful if you want to make sure that you always have the most current version of the resoruce available in your course. Create a Locked Link allows you to create a link to the current version of the resource. Any changes made to the resource after you create the link will not affect your course. Import into Content is useful if you need to modify the original content to make it work in your course. Let's choose the first option for this example and click Next.
  3. Choose a parent module in which to put the learning object and click the Create Link button.
  4. Once D2L finished processing the request, you should notice that learning object in your course contents!

This tutorial has covered the basics of using the LOR, but there are some extra options you may want to learn about as well. Click here to download D2L's User Guide for the Learning Object Repository.
