SUMMARY OF ADJUNCT SURVEY 2001

Major Concerns

.Adjuncts believe salary for adjuncts should be improved.

.There is absolutely no job security. Is there any way to improve this?

.The issue of insurance and retirement benefits is a major concern.

.Adjuncts would like to be treated with respect, and they would like to be included as a part of the team.

.The issue of communication with adjuncts is a major concern.Adjuncts receive very little or inadequate information. We never hear from our departments unless there is a problem.

.Many adjuncts are not aware they can receive a professional development raise despite the fact it is printed in the catalog.

a.Perhaps the Adjunct Representatives could be introduced at the In-Service Meetings each semester. Many adjuncts do not know they have a representative to Steering Committee and Faculty Council.

.The e-mail access needs to be improved. The Adjunct List never includes all adjuncts.

.Adjuncts would like to be given priority in hiring if all other qualifications are equal. If an adjunct is not selected for a position, we believe he/she should be counseled by the hiring department head or Human Resources as to what can be done to improve chances of being hired next time.

.Adjuncts would like to be included in course planning meetings and department meetings.Perhaps this could be done by appointing an adjunct representative each semester to attend department meetings.

.Adjuncts would like to be able to take courses free at Pellissippi like other state employees can.

.The bookstore discount that was granted to adjuncts last semester needs to be handled more efficiently. Not all employees are aware of the discount, and many times Bookstore personnel refuse to give the discount to adjuncts or the discount is limited to certain items.

.Many adjuncts commented that they want to do the best job they can in teaching at Pellissippi.

.Concern was also expressed about the attendance system at Pellissippi.Adjuncts believe the policy is too liberal.
