meeting was called to order at

From TBR
At last week’s TBR
meeting there were two issues of interest to
The Defining Our
Future document that was completed last year by all of the institutions in the system will be followed
up with another study, to be entitled A Vision of Excellence, which will focus on the future of
education in the state of

From Learning
Council
Learning Council
approved the change from “excellent” to “exceptional” in the evaluation
document. It will not be put into effect
for the 2003 cycle.
K. Byrd brought the
motion to reconsider the 2004 summer schedule to Dr. Bruns, but the schedule
has been decided and will not be revisited.
Learning Council
was informed that Faculty Council had approved the formation of a standing
Evaluation Committee. K. Byrd seeks
volunteers for the committee from each department and/or will appoint members
as necessary.

From faculty
Some aspects of the
Safety Plan were clarified.
Some faculty are concerned about students who attend year after
year with no progress and no degree. TBR
policy permits this, and therefore,

Election of
adjunct faculty representative
John Fairstein made the following motion.
Motion 1: That
Kelly Waldrop be elected as the second faculty
representative for adjuncts.
The motion was approved.
IV. Committee
Reports
Adjunct Faculty John Fairstein
J. Fairstein
is working to compile statistics on adjuncts and to form committees to assist
in
furthering
adjunct concerns. He is using WebCT to communicate
with adjuncts.
Promotion/Tenure Don
Thomas/Janice Rowland
The committee has formed.
Faculty Forums Elaine Oswald/Paul Baxter
E. Oswald sent an e-mail announcing a
four week discussion of The Courage to Teach that will
begin
Oct. 21.
Paula Short of TBR may be invited to be the featured
speaker at a Faculty Forum in the spring.
Student Scholarships Karen Cornell
Books are needed. Main campus sale
will be Mar. 10-11. A Magnolia representative is needed.
Rules Committee Donn King
Members are Donnie Thomas, John Fairstein, and Anita Maddox. Another member is needed.
Evaluation Committee
This will be forming in the future.

Business
Motions that were referred back to Steering from full
Faculty Council were acted upon as follows:

That the phrase “adjunct faculty” means “currently
employed at
Discussion of this
motion was postponed until the next Steering Committee meeting so that K. Byrd
can check with Peggy Wilson about the official definition of “adjunct faculty.”

That Article 8, section 4, subparts E3a be struck and the following substituted: “Adjunct faculty
receive one seat on the Faculty Council Steering Committee. Adjunct faculty are defined as part-time teachers who are employed
semester by semester. In order to represent the adjunct faculty and exercise a
vote in Faculty Council business or on the Steering Committee, the adjunct must
be teaching in the current major semester (fall or spring). One adjunct
representative is elected each year and serves two years or until a successor
is elected. Only the senior representative exercises a vote on the Steering
Committee. If the senior adjunct representative is unable to exercise his/her
vote because of not teaching in a given semester, his/her term is ended early
and the junior representative becomes the senior representative. Vacancies will
be filled by election at the next Steering Committee meeting.”
This motion was
amended to the following:
